🔬🧪 Looking Back… Our First Term in the Science Lab! 🧪🔬
Throughout the first term, our students had the opportunity to enrich their learning through hands-on experiences in the Science Lab. By exploring, experimenting and asking questions, they deepened their conceptual understanding while making meaningful transdisciplinary connections with the Units of Inquiry explored in the classroom.
Take a look at some of the exciting learning experiences that took place throughout the term!
Y1
This past term, our eager Y1 inquirers visited the science lab to learn how to make their own playdough. They were also able to practice several skills important for lab work: measuring, following steps, mixing and team work. Also, following their inquiry into colonial times, they learned about the process of soap making and had a chance to make their own personalized soaps.
Y2
Our Y2 students were able to visit the science lab while learning about their bodies and the way they change as they grow. The activities allowed them to exercise their practical skills by measuring the length of their hands and feet. Also, within the framework of a UOI related to healthy habits, they learned about their teeth and the best way to keep them healthy. To this end, they used eggshells as model teeth to test the effect different drinks can have on them and also explore the importance of brushing them.
Y3
During this term and throughout different UOIs, our Y3 students visited the science lab to exercise their practical skills and further their learning with hands-on experiences.They explored mixtures and came up with the steps to separate their components, they were able to explore the states of matter by making their own candles and also learn about oxidation and corrosion, testing what is needed in order for iron nails to rust. Finally, during an inquiry into immigration, they were able to observe and illustrate common parasites, lice and fleas, gaining valuable insights into their anatomy and where and how they live and feed.
Y4
Y4 students had the chance to hone their labware use skills by challenging themselves to find the best tools to measure a given volume of water. Moreover, they had their first experience manipulating a Bunsen burner, working in pairs to learn how to light and use that key piece of lab equipment. They also had the chance to apply what they learned about taxonomy to help them solve the challenge of classifying some monsters according to their characteristics. Finally, they were able to observe and explore the differences between different types of skeletons, recording their observations.
Y5
During this past term, Y5 students inquired about systems and, in their English classes, visited the lab to expand their knowledge about the Earth-Moon-Sun system and the interactions between them. Throughout several visits, they were able to model the movement of these celestial bodies relative to each other and devise explanations for different phenomena such as why we have day and night, how the different seasons relate to the Earth’s movement around the Sun and what are the conditions necessary for the occurrence of different kinds of eclipses.

Durante el primer trimestre, nuestros alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de enriquecer sus aprendizajes a través de experiencias prácticas en el Laboratorio de Ciencias. Explorando, formulando preguntas, creando hipótesis y experimentando, fueron profundizando su comprensión conceptual mientras establecían conexiones transdisciplinarias significativas con las Unidades de Indagación trabajadas en el aula.

Y1
Durante este trimestre, nuestros pequeños indagadores de Y1 visitaron el laboratorio para aprender a fabricar su propia masa de modelar. Además, tuvieron la oportunidad de desarrollar habilidades fundamentales para el trabajo científico, como medir, seguir procedimientos, mezclar materiales y trabajar en equipo. Más adelante, en conexión con su indagación sobre la época colonial, exploraron el proceso de elaboración del jabón y crearon sus propios jabones personalizados.
Y2
Los alumnos de Y2 visitaron el laboratorio mientras aprendían sobre su cuerpo y los cambios que experimenta a medida que crecen. Las actividades les permitieron poner en práctica habilidades de medición comparando el tamaño de sus manos y pies. Además, en el marco de una Unidad de Indagación relacionada con los hábitos saludables, aprendieron sobre el cuidado de los dientes y las mejores formas de mantenerlos sanos. Para ello, utilizaron cáscaras de huevo como modelo de dientes para investigar el efecto que distintas bebidas pueden tener sobre ellos y explorar la importancia del cepillado.
Y3
Durante este trimestre y en el marco de diferentes Unidades de Indagación, los alumnos de Y3 visitaron el laboratorio para desarrollar habilidades prácticas y profundizar sus aprendizajes a través de experiencias concretas. Exploraron mezclas y diseñaron procedimientos para separar sus componentes; investigaron los estados de la materia fabricando sus propias velas; y aprendieron sobre oxidación y corrosión mediante experimentos con clavos de hierro para descubrir qué condiciones favorecen la formación de óxido. Finalmente, durante una indagación sobre inmigración, observaron e ilustraron parásitos comunes como piojos y pulgas, adquiriendo valiosos conocimientos sobre su anatomía y sus formas de vida.
Y4
Los alumnos de Y4 tuvieron la oportunidad de perfeccionar el uso del material de laboratorio enfrentándose al desafío de identificar los instrumentos más adecuados para medir distintos volúmenes de agua. Además, realizaron su primera experiencia utilizando un mechero Bunsen, trabajando en parejas para aprender a encenderlo y utilizarlo correctamente. También aplicaron sus conocimientos sobre taxonomía para resolver el desafío de clasificar distintos “monstruos” según sus características y exploraron las diferencias entre distintos tipos de esqueletos mediante la observación y el registro de evidencias.
Y5
Durante este trimestre, los alumnos de Y5 indagaron sobre los sistemas y, en sus clases de inglés, visitaron el laboratorio para ampliar sus conocimientos sobre el sistema Tierra-Luna-Sol y las interacciones entre estos cuerpos celestes. A lo largo de varias visitas, modelaron sus movimientos relativos y elaboraron explicaciones sobre diferentes fenómenos, como la alternancia entre el día y la noche, la relación entre las estaciones del año y el movimiento de la Tierra alrededor del Sol, y las condiciones necesarias para que ocurran distintos tipos de eclipses.
