A Long, Long Time Ago… Y2 Travelled to Ancient Egypt!
In the Unit of Inquiry “A Long, Long Time Ago”, our Y2 students explored how knowledge of ancient civilisations helps us understand the changes that societies have undergone throughout time. Through the concepts of change and perspective, they investigated how life was organised in Ancient Egypt, its beliefs, and the connections between the past and the present.
The unit began with a journey through time: the classroom was transformed into an aeroplane bound for Ancient Egypt, with the teachers as captains and the students as passengers on this adventure. In both languages, students inquired into this fascinating civilisation through a variety of sources, including texts, videos, image analysis, drawings and maps.
In the Science Lab, they created creams and essences inspired by those used by the Ancient Egyptians, built sundials, and explored how the Earth’s movement gives rise to day and night. They also continued their inquiry beyond the school setting with an educational visit to the Tutankhamun exhibition.
As the culmination of this transdisciplinary experience, and in collaboration with the Art department, students created clay pieces inspired by Egyptian architecture, sculpture and crafts. Each child chose the challenge they wished to undertake, modelling sculptures, sarcophagi or Egyptian houses. Their creations are currently being fired and will be ready after the holidays.

En la unidad de indagación “Hace mucho tiempo atrás”, los alumnos de Y2 exploraron cómo el conocimiento de las civilizaciones antiguas nos ayuda a comprender los cambios que han experimentado las sociedades a lo largo del tiempo. A través de los conceptos de cambio y perspectiva, investigaron cómo se organizaba la vida en el Antiguo Egipto, sus creencias y las conexiones entre el pasado y el presente.
La unidad comenzó con un viaje en el tiempo: el aula se transformó en un avión rumbo al Antiguo Egipto, con las docentes como capitanas y los alumnos como pasajeros de esta aventura… En ambos idiomas, los estudiantes indagaron sobre esta fascinante civilización a través de diversas fuentes de información, como textos, videos, análisis de imágenes, dibujos y mapas.
En el Science Lab, elaboraron cremas y esencias inspiradas en las utilizadas por los antiguos egipcios, construyeron relojes de sol y exploraron cómo el movimiento de la Tierra da origen al día y la noche. También continuaron su investigación fuera del contexto escolar con una salida didáctica a la muestra de Tutankamón.
Como cierre de esta experiencia transdisciplinaria, y en articulación con Arte, los alumnos crearon piezas de arcilla inspiradas en la arquitectura, las esculturas y las artesanías egipcias. Cada uno eligió el desafío que deseaba asumir, modelando esculturas, sarcófagos o viviendas egipcias. Sus piezas están ahora en proceso de horneado y estarán listas a la vuelta de las vacaciones.
