We Are KNOWLEDGEABLE! A Look Back at the Science Lab Experiences from this First Half of the Year - Olivos Primary

During the first half of the year, students from different year groups at Olivos Primary enjoyed unique experiences in our science lab, connecting their Units of Inquiry with hands-on activities that fostered their curiosity, scientific thinking, and their collaborative skills.
– Y2 students, as part of their first UOI “We are all different, we are all alike”, explored how our bodies change as we grow. They measured their hands and feet, and worked in teams to identify bones and build a life-sized skeleton. In another visit, linked to healthy habits, they used eggshells as model teeth to observe the effects of different drinks and reflect on the importance of brushing and dental care.
– Y3 students explored changes in states of matter by making their own candles and conducted an investigation on hand hygiene by comparing the presence of microorganisms before and after washing their hands in different ways. They also studied oxidation and corrosion, observing how and when rust forms on iron nails.
– Y4 groups began familiarising themselves with laboratory equipment by comparing tools to measure water volumes accurately. They also had their first experience using a Bunsen burner, learning how to light and handle it with responsibility and care.
– Finally, within their UOI “Systems that shape the world”, Y5 students explored the Earth-Moon-Sun system. They modelled the relative movements of these celestial bodies to better understand phenomena such as day and night, the seasons, and different types of eclipses.
Each lab visit was an opportunity to explore, discover and build meaningful knowledge. We look forward to more learning ahead! 💡🧪

¡Somos INSTRUIDOS E INFORMADOS! Un recorrido por las experiencias en el Laboratorio de Ciencias de esta Primera mitad del año – Primaria Olivos
Durante esta primera mitad del año, los estudiantes de distintos grados de la primaria de Olivos vivieron experiencias únicas en nuestro laboratorio de ciencias, conectando sus unidades de indagación con actividades prácticas que promovieron su curiosidad, pensamiento científico y habilidades de trabajo colaborativo.
– Los chicos y chicas de Y2, en el marco de su UOI 1 “Somos todos diferentes, somos todos iguales”, mientras investigaban sobre el cuerpo humano y sus cambios a lo largo del crecimiento, midieron sus manos y pies, y trabajaron en equipo para identificar huesos y construir un esqueleto en tamaño real. En otra visita, relacionada con los hábitos saludables, utilizaron cáscaras de huevo como modelos de dientes para observar los efectos de diferentes bebidas en los mismos y reflexionar sobre la importancia del cepillado y el cuidado bucal.
– Los estudiantes de Y3 exploraron los cambios de estado de la materia elaborando sus propias velas, y realizaron una investigación sobre la higiene de las manos, comparando la presencia de microorganismos antes y después de distintas formas de lavado. También estudiaron los procesos de oxidación y corrosión, observando cómo y cuándo se genera óxido en clavos de hierro.
– Los grupos de Y4 comenzaron a familiarizarse con el uso de los materiales de laboratorio, comparando distintas herramientas para medir volúmenes de agua con precisión. Además, vivieron su primera experiencia con el mechero Bunsen, aprendiendo a encenderlo y manipularlo con responsabilidad y cuidado.
– Finalmente, en el marco de su unidad “Sistemas que organizan el mundo”, los estudiantes de Y5 profundizaron en el sistema Tierra-Luna-Sol. Modelaron los movimientos relativos de estos cuerpos celestes para comprender fenómenos como el día y la noche, las estaciones del año y los distintos tipos de eclipses.
Cada visita al laboratorio fue una oportunidad para explorar, descubrir y construir conocimientos de manera significativa. ¡Seguiremos así! 💡🧪
