2nd Service Day at Northlands

To conclude their Unit of Inquiry Nº 2, “Institutions”, within the Sharing the Planet theme, Year 3 students delivered an assembly that reflected on citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and the crucial role both women and men have played in shaping national identities across political, cultural, scientific, economic, and social dimensions.
Guided by the inspiring series Little People, Big Dreams, students explored the lives of remarkable women who changed the world through their fight for human rights: Malala Yousafzai (right to education), Emmeline Pankhurst (right to vote), Juana Azurduy (right to freedom), Rosa Parks (right to diversity), and Greta Thunberg (right to a sustainable future).
The children created research cards, investigated the motivations behind these women’s struggles, and reflected on how their courage transformed society.
The assembly was entirely student-led: they wrote their own script and decided how to present it to their families. In art class, they worked on portrait murals using various artistic techniques. The event concluded with an emotional performance of a song about children’s rights, sung to the melody of Imagine.
With a mix of nerves and joy, Year 3 offered a moving and meaningful presentation that showcased their learning and deep sense of social awareness.

Como cierre de la Unidad de Indagación N.º 2 “Instituciones”, en el marco de Sharing the Planet, los alumnos de Year 3 prepararon un assembly que puso en valor los derechos y responsabilidades de los ciudadanos y la participación de mujeres y varones en la construcción de las identidades nacionales desde diferentes dimensiones: políticas, culturales, científicas, económicas y sociales.
Inspirados por la colección de libros Little People, Big Dreams, los estudiantes investigaron la vida y legado de mujeres que cambiaron el mundo a través de su lucha por los derechos humanos: Malala Yousafzai (derecho a la educación), Emmeline Pankhurst (derecho al voto), Juana Azurduy (derecho a la libertad), Rosa Parks (derecho a la diversidad) y Greta Thunberg (derecho a un futuro habitable y libre de la crisis climática).
Los alumnos elaboraron fichas biográficas, investigaron qué motivó a estas líderes a alzar la voz y reflexionaron sobre el impacto de sus acciones en el mundo.
El resultado de todo este proceso fue un assembly íntegramente preparado por ellos: desde el guion hasta la puesta en escena. En clase de arte, realizaron retratos y murales utilizando diferentes técnicas de dibujo y pintura. El cierre fue un momento inolvidable: cantaron una canción sobre los derechos del niño, con la melodía de Imagine, que emocionó a todos los presentes.
Entre nervios y entusiasmo, Year 3 nos regaló una presentación profunda, significativa y llena de compromiso.

We began the week with a very special Assembly, led by our House Captains, which invited us to reflect on the value of serving others with generosity.
In the days leading up to the event, each group worked during their PSE lessons on the themes of Service, Solidarity and Generosity, connecting these values with the reality faced by people experiencing homelessness. They also reflected on Friendship, Service & Gratitude, thinking together about how to turn kindness and generosity into concrete actions.
On Friday, we opened the school doors to weave community ties, sharing a meaningful moment between families and pupils. For this occasion, Y5 pupils baked cakes alongside K5 to offer a special treat to participants, and Y1 created heartfelt thank-you cards.
Our House Captains welcomed the donations and organised the inventory.
Together, we were a great team, weaving bonds and values that strengthen us as a community.

Comenzamos la semana con una Assembly muy especial, liderada por nuestros House Captains, que nos invitó a reflexionar sobre el valor de servir a los demás con generosidad.
Durante los días previos, cada grupo trabajó en los espacios de PSE sobre Servicio, Solidaridad y Generosidad, conectando estos valores con la realidad de las personas en situación de calle. También reflexionaron sobre Friendship, Service & Gratitude, pensando juntos cómo transformar la amabilidad y la generosidad en acciones concretas.
– El viernes, abrimos las puertas del colegio para tejer en comunidad, compartiendo un momento especial entre familias y alumnos. Para esta ocasión, los chicos de Y5 cocinaron budines junto a K5 para agasajar a quienes participaban, e Y1 preparó tarjetas de agradecimiento con mucho cariño.
– Los House Captains recibieron las donaciones y organizaron el inventario.
Entre todos, fuimos un gran equipo, tejiendo lazos y valores que nos fortalecen como comunidad.
